Academy of Sura מתיבתא דסורא
The academy Rav founded at Sura (with its twin town Mata Mechasya), which carried Babylonian Torah for some eight centuries: seat of Rav, Rav Huna, Rav Chisda, Rav Ashi, and Ravina II among the amoraim, and of geonim including Yehudai, Amram, and Saadia. By the late ninth century the academy itself sat in Baghdad while keeping the name of Sura.

| The Iggeret's year-by-year roster of Sura's heads — Rav's line to Ravina II at Mata Mechasya, then the geonim down to Saadia and the last gaon, Yosef bar Yaakov, after whom "there was no metivta at Mata Mechasya" — is recorded in this atlas as structured roles (with AM tenures) on the entries of the heads themselves.

| The evidentiary seam in Sura's roster runs in three grades: Iggeret-grade to Ravina II (through 4260 AM) and again from the rostered century before Yehudai onward (from 4449); chronicle-grade between — Mar bar Rav Huna, Rav Chanina, Rav Huna, Rav Sheshna (c. 591/609–689 CE, from the conventional geonic lists); and for the savoraic stretch between Ravina II and Mar bar Rav Huna the sources name only Rav Eina, year-less. Sherira's two notices of cross-academy appointments — Mar Rav Shmuel and Yehudai, brought from Pumbedita "since there was no one in Sura who compared in wisdom" — are the source's own markers of the academy's reduced bench; no vacancy is encoded that no source states.
