Bustanai בוסתנאי
First exilarch under Arab rule, and the hinge of the office's medieval history: every later exilarchal line traced itself through him. Around his name grew the famous tradition — the wasp on his brow that he would not brush away before royalty, rewarded with the wasp on the exilarchal seal, and the captive Persian princess given him by the caliph, whose sons' status kept geonic courts busy for generations.

|---|---|---|---|
| The tradition of Bustanai: the caliph (Omar, in most versions) restored the youth to the exilarchate and gave him Izdundad, daughter of the Persian king Chosroes, as wife; the standing of her sons — whether she was validly freed and married — was contested by his other descendants and debated in geonic responsa. The wasp story, explaining his name and the exilarchal seal, belongs to the same cycle.
The narrative is legendary in form and late in attestation; but Bustanai's existence, his tenure at the start of Arab rule, and the dispute over the princess's sons are presupposed by geonic-era legal sources. Honest-confidence entry.
