Herod's son who ruled the Galil and Perea for over forty years — the longest tenure in the dynasty. He founded Tiberias on the lake in honor of Tiberius (built over graves, Josephus notes, so that settling it required inducements); his divorce of the Nabatean princess for Herodias cost him a war, and his bid for a royal title cost him everything — Caligula exiled him to Gaul.
