Rabbeinu Nissim ben Yaakov רבנו נסים בן יעקב
Second master of Kairouan beside Rabbeinu Chananel; author of the Mafteach (key to the Talmud's cross-references) and of the earliest Jewish story collection composed to strengthen faith. Son and student of R' Yaakov ben Nissim (Yaakov ben Nissim ibn Shahin), the very addressee of Rav Sherira's Iggeret — his house is literally where the chain's own history was mailed — and student also of R' Chushiel (Chushiel ben Elchanan).

|---|---|---|---|
| He received from his father R' Yaakov ben Nissim, head of a Kairouan academy and the scholar to whom the Iggeret of Rav Sherira Gaon was addressed, and also from R' Chushiel, two of whose pupils were his own son Chananel and Nissim ben Yaakov — Nissim reports receiving from Chushiel the full version of a story the Talmud leaves untold. Both personal reception edges are attested and drawn.
His relationship with Rav Hai Gaon remains correspondence only — deliberately not a personal edge; the epistolary conduit from the geonim to Kairouan is drawn as a writings edge on his father Yaakov ben Nissim ibn Shahin (and on Rabbeinu Chananel for Hai's material in Chananel's commentary).

| His Sefer HaMafteach and his commentary preserved geonic learning for the West, and tradition counts the Rif among those formed by Kairouan's two masters. | tradition | ★★★☆☆ | |
| His daughter married Yehosef HaNagid, son of Shmuel HaNagid of Granada; Yehosef was killed in the Granada massacre of 1066 and she was left widowed.
Ibn Daud is the main source for the marriage; the 1066 Granada massacre is independently attested in Arabic sources.

The identity of the bereaved addressee (commonly given as a father-in-law/brother-in-law) is less secure than the authorship.
