Sealing of the Talmud Bavli חתימת התלמוד

The sealing of the Talmud Bavli (Talmud Bavli) — the moment the tradition itself marks as "the end of hora'ah," after which no authority may dispute the Talmud's conclusions. Enacted by Rav Ashi and Ravina and their academies (no person entities yet exist for them in the atlas; see report), with the savoraim finishing the polishing. Still practiced in the strongest sense: the sealed Talmud remains the operative constitution of halakhah.

"Rav Ashi and Ravina — the end of hora'ah" — the Talmud's own marker, paired with "Rabbi and R' Natan — the end of Mishnah," framing the two sealings as parallel acts. rabbinic ★★★★☆
Rav Sherira Gaon supplies the narrative and the date: hora'ah accumulated generation by generation until Ravina, whose death on 13 Kislev, Seleucid year 811 (499/500 CE) he records as the end of hora'ah, with the savoraim thereafter explaining but not adding.
Work-level Sefaria ref cited because this edition's section-level API refs resolve inconsistently; passages verified in the sections noted.
tradition ★★★★☆
Academic scholarship complicates the clean sealing: the anonymous dialectical layer is argued to postdate the named amoraim by a century or more, making the "sealing" a process spanning the savoraic period rather than an event in 500 CE.
The traditional date anchors the map; the academic view is recorded alongside without merging, as with the Mishnah's redaction (Redaction of the Mishnah).
